Have you been curious about this new craze going on just about every pond, river and lake around the country? Birthed hundreds of years ago in Bolivia and refined more recently in Hawaii, SUP is pretty much a big surfboard that you paddle with a long canoe paddle. Hey, I thought it was silly too until I really tried it. It’s like walking on water…you’ll see EVERYTHING down there! Besides being great fun, it is also an amazing core workout…two statements never found in the same sentence!

Enjoy a long weekend spent at my home on 40 acres of hardwoods along the beautiful Betsie River. You'll be treated to a series of skills workshops on local calm waters followed by a Sunday trip on Lake Michigan to practice your new skills. We will introduce you to all the basic strokes, safety skills and ways to have fun walking on water. Three comfortable nights lodging, several fine meals and equipment are all provided. You'll be able to swap stories over a glass of wine next to the fireplace or have a walk through the woods to the river when you are not out on the water.

Sleeping Bear Dunes

Day 1) After dinner Thursday evening arrival between 7-9 PM. Get acquainted and settled.

Day 2) Friday morning basics skills workshop followed by lunch on the lake and a tour on a lake or river.. Farmer John/Jane wetsuits recommended.

Day 3) After a fine breakfast, we'll gear up for a trip to Lake Michigan (weather permitting) to hone your techniques and enjoy a little open water practice. Here you’ll learn how to handle your board in slightly lumpier conditions.  Late afternoon beach session with snacks and local wines.

Day 4) After Sunday brunch, we’ll gear up for a downwind run or a river paddle and turn you loose around 2 for your trip home. 

This program is designed to give you a big leg-up in trying out this exciting new sport and you’ll leave with skills to be able to do this on your own.

Cost includes ACA certified instruction, rustic river home accommodations, all equipment and some very fine meals. Please call if you have special diet requirements. You are more than welcome to bring your own board if you have one and we'll be happy to help you learn to get the most out of it.

Stuff to Bring

Clothes for Getting Wet:

  • Wetsuit: for May/June/September/October (can be rented from us for $10/day)
  • Synthetic long underwear: polypropylene, polyester, coolmax, etc….anything but cotton, both tops and bottoms, can be worn under shorts too for a very comfortable if not very stylish ensemble.
  • Swimsuit
  • Fleece Jacket
  • Water shoes or neoprene boots: sandals don’t work very well.

Odds and Ends:

  • One liter water bottle
  • Sunscreen
  • Anything alcoholic you may want with evening meals

Registration: A $150 deposit is required to hold your space. Reservation fees are refundable until 30 days before the trip. The balance is also due 30 days prior to departure. Space is limited to 4, so plan ahead...
