Uncommon Adventures

Skill Level: Beginner through advancedPt. Betsie Lighthouse Station

This will be a very special, once-in-a-lifetime experience. We've had an incredibly rare opportunity to rent the restored Lifesaving Station at Point Betsie to offer you a premium program steeped in the romance of the early 1900's. Spend 4 nights with us on the beach, sampling all the areas fine paddling options, learning some kayak skills, natural history and enjoying the fine seasonal fare that makes NW Michigan such a great place to visit. We'll pamper you with superb local wines, fresh berries, moral mushrooms and terrific equipment. Ask any of your clients….its worth it just for the food. We're committing ourselves to raising the bar on kayak retreats to the sublime on this one.

We have time and some great options during this program. With miles of Lake Michigan beach in either direction, 7 bedrooms and a whole lot of toys, we can promise you a blast. We may even toss some windsurfing or fishing into the mix. With a little coaching, we can help you make your boat dance on water….giving you a feeling you just can't get with any other watercraft. You'll know just why Otters always look like they're having a good time. This won't be a heavily skills oriented program…our goal is to give you a great experience and helping you have a great time!

Day 1: Saturday arrival Between 4-6 pm at Pt. Betsie Livesaving Station. Get acquainted and settled. Dinner and orientation at 7pm.

Day 2: After a basic skills orientation or review depending on where you are starting from, we'll explore one our local inland waters within the Lakeshore park to get our feet wet.

Days 3-4: We are going to explore Sleeping Bear's greatest hits….depending on the weather and our whims, we may find ourselves rounding Pyramid Point, paddling a gentle river or playing in the waves in the front yard of Pt. Betsie. We have incredible options, an incredible venue and the valuable commodity of all….time.

Day 5: After a terrific Brunch, we'll send you off around 10 am for home or continuance of your holiday week in another location.

Included: Professional ACA open water certified guide/instructor, pleasant accommodations, kayaking equipment (boat, paddle, PFD, skirt) and some very fine meals. Please call if you have special diet requirements. You are more than welcome to bring your own touring kayak if you have one and we'll be happy to help you learn to get the most out of it.

What to bring for kayaking:

  • Pt. Betsie LighthouseFarmer John/Jane style wetsuit: only for May/June/September/October, can be rented from us for $10/day. Warm weather: 2 pairs quick drying synthetic shorts.
  • Synthetic t-shirt or long sleeve top: polypropelene, polyester, coolmax, etc….anything but cotton.
  • Fleece Jacket
  • Paddling Jacket or rain parka: I have a few loaners.
  • Water shoes or neoprene boots: I try to discourage sandals, because they can get tangled in footrests….and that's bad if your upside down. Old sneakers work fine.

Odds and Ends:

  • One liter water bottle
  • Sunscreen
  • Any special beverages that you enjoy that we may not think of.

Personal clothing for the weekend…..hey, throw in something nice, dinner will be good enough to dress up for, but shoes will always be optional
