Uncommon News Spring 2009

Uncommon Adventures

From Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy comes solid advice for our times. DON’T PANIC… in large friendly letters. We’re outdoor people. When it rains, we put on a raincoat. When the road ends, we look for a trail. Sometimes when the going gets weird, the weird turn pro. During difficult times like this, we have an even greater need to recharge and escape. We’re here to help with that in any way we can. Have something to trade, maybe a skill to lend…we’ll consider it. There will be light. Remember flexible things don’t break.

News from the Islands
This year’s Bay Islands trips were amazing, but numbers were way down as one might expect.  The practical upshot of fewer tourists for us is that, well, THERE ARE FEWER TOURISTS!  So, nice Caribbean island paddling destination with great lodging, private estate gardens, easy air access, amazing food and you have it all to yourselves for a reasonable price!  Consider a trip for 2010…early booking 10% discount and you can name your week!

Refer to the Halibut Cove Ocean Skills program. Facilitated by Tom Pogson, our Alaskan program partner, this program is designed for paddlers looking to increase their skills and safety margins in an ocean environment. Why not get your BCU 3 star skills award in an exciting paddling environment with interesting navigation and tidal activity? Build this in as a start to a kayak trip in Alaska’s Kenai peninsula.

From Michael’s blog on returning from Honduras:
Re-entry and Reunions, 4-27-09

"Coming back into the States and slamming gears into the high speed, instant messaging, express lane, espresso charged, text crazed, fast food, speed date, multi-tasked, super-sized, midnight madness sale mentality just makes me want to hug myself and crawl into a corner and rock back and forth. Re-entry shock of flying is a bit rough on a person. Driving down was slower, but you were always wholly there."  more...
